Sierra Foothills Reservoir Community
Welcome to Valley Springs, a Calaveras County community in the Sierra Nevada foothills ringed by three recreational reservoirs.
Valley Springs is a census-designated place in Calaveras County, California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The community, formerly known as Spring Valley and Valley Spring, is registered as California Historical Landmark No. 251 in recognition of its railroad and train depot heritage; the original depot building, known locally simply as "the Depot," still stands within the historic settlement. Valley Springs counted 910 residents in the 2020 census. The community sits at the western edge of Calaveras County, in the transition between the San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra foothills. Its growth has been shaped in large part by water and roads. In the mid-20th century, the development of the Camanche and New Hogan reservoirs, together with the earlier Pardee Reservoir, brought recreation and helped fuel residential growth. The 1930s and 1940s saw steady population increases of several percent a year, and the community has since become one of Calaveras County's more populous places. Valley Springs' position gives it a foothill climate and landscape—oak-studded grasslands rising toward pine forest—while keeping it within commuting reach of Stockton, Lodi, and Sacramento. That combination of rural living and commuter access has long drawn residents seeking more space than the valley's larger cities offer, and it has made the community a gateway between the Central Valley and the Sierra. Commercial life clusters along the state highways that pass through, serving residents and travelers headed to the reservoirs and mountains. Public schools are part of the Calaveras Unified School District, with Valley Springs and Jenny Lind elementary schools in the area and Calaveras High School in nearby San Andreas, the county seat. Three reservoirs—Camanche, Pardee, and Hogan—anchor outdoor recreation on the community's doorstep.

City Guide
Housing in Valley Springs reflects its evolution from a small rail settlement into a foothill residential community. The area offers single-family homes on larger lots, rural properties with acreage, and established neighborhoods around the historic core, with ranch-style and newer construction both common. Growth has historically followed the reservoirs and commuter access rather than dense master planning, so the housing character is varied and spread out, with room between homes and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Valley Springs grew from a historic rail settlement, and the original townsite around the old train depot—known locally simply as "the Depot"—remains a defining landmark. Around that core, residential areas and subdivisions have developed along the highway corridors, including the nearby Jenny Lind area, which shares the community's identity and its elementary school. The overall feel is of scattered foothill neighborhoods rather than a single dense town center.
Life in Valley Springs balances foothill tranquility with practical commuter access. Residents enjoy an oak-studded landscape rising toward pine forest, with the three reservoirs providing recreation through much of the year. The community's commercial life clusters along the state highways that pass through, serving both locals and travelers headed to the lakes and mountains. Many residents commute westward to Stockton, Lodi, or Sacramento for work, returning to the quieter pace and open space of the foothills at the end of the day.
Valley Springs is served by the Calaveras Unified School District, the largest district in Calaveras County, which enrolls roughly 3,000 pre-K through 12th-grade students. Valley Springs Elementary School is located in the community's original settlement, and Jenny Lind Elementary serves the nearby area of the same name, while Calaveras High School is in San Andreas. The district provides the full K–12 pathway for foothill families across the county's western side.

Commuters use these corridors to reach Sacramento to the northwest as well. The community's position makes it a practical foothill base for work in the Central Valley while retaining easy access to the mountains and reservoirs nearby.
The three reservoirs near Valley Springs—Camanche, Pardee, and New Hogan Lake—anchor outdoor recreation, offering boating, fishing, swimming, camping, and watersports. The Sierra Nevada foothills beyond provide hiking, hunting, and scenic drives toward the high country, while the nearby town of Angels Camp and other Calaveras County communities add historical and cultural stops. The reservoirs' shorelines and launch ramps make the area a regional destination for anglers and boaters.
